Norman Cornish: A Slice of Life 2023

The fascinating Norman Cornish autobiography, 'A Slice of Life', was originally published in 1989 by Mallabar Contemporary Arts, and then followed by two abridged editions.

The original edition of the book, containing eighty-one illustrations, has now been reprinted.

The artist describes the main events that shaped and coloured his life. He talks of his childhood and early life, then goes on to explain his first experiences working as a miner. He highlights how the Spennymoor Settlement and its sketching club were so influential in his development as an artist. The book chronicles many of the key moments from his early adult life where he was balancing his work as a miner at the same time as developing his growing reputation as an artist through a series of exhibitions and television appearances. The artist explains the problems he encountered whilst painting his famous Durham Miners' Gala mural. Finally, he chronicles how his artistic career began to flourish after he made the decision to leave his mining career behind him.

Some of his deepest thoughts are highlighted in the book and there is a fascinating insight into how, as a creative artist, he had his own special way of looking at the world.

The book features a foreword by Melvyn Bragg, twelve chapters and a postscript.

    97 Pages, 81 illustrations, 24.5cm x 17.5cm.

    The Quintessential Cornish

The Quintessential Cornish is the authorised biography of celebrated artist Norman Cornish and is again available, reprinted to celebrate with his centenary year. As the authors we had known Norman for many years when we were asked to write his authorised biography to coincide with his 90th birthday. We regularly held conversations with Norman to ensure biographical accuracy for our book, which runs to 180 full colour pages with 150 illustrations and introduction by author Sid Chaplin’s widow Rene who was a close friend of the Cornish family.

We document and discuss Norman’s life and achievements and contextualise the significance of his work from the art perspective and from its importance as a social documentary. We debate Norman’s style, techniques and influences and the importance of his work in the panoply of twentieth century British art, analysing why his images are immediately accessible and memorable to all.

It was always a pleasure to talk to Norman and to hear his far-ranging thoughts on art and his philosophy of his personal study of his prime subject – human interaction in his home town community.

Although working as a collier for over 30 years, Norman always saw himself as an artist who happened to make his living as a miner before becoming a full-time professional artist in 1966.

Although a very able communicator with a great facility for language, Norman always thought pictorially. It was, however, his ability to translate these images into paintings that gave him his greatest gift of communication.

Behind the Scenes: The Norman Cornish Sketchbooks

There are four themes in the book covering: Mining, Observations of People, Bar Scenes and Street Scenes. The previously unseen sketches reveal the initial work developed to create his iconic images so typical of life in his era. Extracted from his sketchbooks and archive, Norman’s own comments and thoughts feature throughout the book. There is also a section taking the reader into Norman’s studio, as well as maps showing the locations of his most memorable images in his home town, together with the Pit Road which is featured for the first time. The essay contributions provide new insight and appreciation of Norman’s work with direct references to the sketches, leading the reader towards a new understanding.

We are also delighted to announce that the Foreword to the book has been written by Melvyn Bragg who is uniquely placed to comment about Norman’s work and his place in 20th Century British Art. Melvyn’s first documentary for BBC TV was in 1963, Two Border Artists, which featured the work of Sheila Fell and Norman Cornish.
