This gantry scene was one of Norman’s earliest memories of working colliery life. He imagined the swaying light of the miners’ lamps as fireflies trapped in a great steel spider’s web.

Pubs made marvellous places to practise drawing. Norman was fascinated by the shapes men made in their various attitudes as they stood at the bar drinking – often with a whippet at heel.

Norman walked the pit road for some 30 years or more so naturally it became a significant part of his life. He once recalled how a droplet of rain in his eye caused an explosion of colour – likening the light of industry to the stars at night. Hence why we see this pit road with glowing lights reminiscent of Van Gogh’s 'The Starry Night'

This picture was one of the most admired pieces during Norman’s Centenary exhibitions. If you were to replace the beer glasses with a wine bottle and wine glasses, you could almost imagine a Parisian bar scene reminiscent of a Lautrec painting.
